Our house was very vanilla - tan siding, tan garage door, tan pillars, tan front door. You name it it was all done in the same paint color. Very blah. So we decided to add a pop of color by paint our front door a deep red (actually called "red pepper" which made me laugh because we love a good red pepper) and to replace the hardware.
All day Saturday was spent sanding, painting, painting, painting, getting and installing a weather seal on the door and installing the new door knob. We learned three interesting facts during the process:
- Savannah really liked playing with the door knob. Not sure how she got it, but she did not want to give it up. Had to do a little tricking to get it from her.
- A good weather seal makes all the difference. The previous home owners had told us that the door "expands and contracts with the weather so sometimes if the door is shut but not locked the wind can blow it open." Take the door of the hinges and you will see that the weather stripe was completely worn out. Probably was worn out 10 years ago. So $15 dollars later we not only have a new weather strip, but a door that actually closes tightly and stays shut. Imagine the energy savings...
- The mini cabinet/door rollers that they sell at Lowes are totally worth it. Nice thin coats of even paint from a tiny little roller. Perfect for a door.
- While looking for a replacement door knocker in the same brushed nickle finish we discovered that only on manufacturer makes a door knocker that has holes 5 inches apart. So we ordered the exact same door knocker that we had before, just in a different finish. It's still on the way so you won't see it in the pictures, but I'll add a picture later of the completed set.
I forgot to blog about it but you can also see in the pictures our new front porch set. It is two Adirondacks chairs and a small table. We got them cheap since they were unassembled and unfinished wood. So with a little elbow grease, wood conditioner, stain, and polyurethane we have some very nice seating.
Next weekend project I think will be taking the columns off of the front porch. Still a little more research to do, but they don't seem to be load bearing and some of our neighbors have removed them too. It would be much nicer to have some more leg room and not have our view obstructed. Stay tuned!

Update - Door knocked has arrived and been installed
there is so nothing better in the whole wide world than a welcoming red door. my mom had one decades again...when any color door was a shocker. But it was wonderful. Good for you. I am so totally a color person. I cannot live in white nor tan. Why be blah when you can be exhilerating! And shocking!
